Solipay is changing the ecosystem around consumer data by providing payment for high-frequency, high-quality, passively generated data delivered via Google Cloud Platform.
Solipay Tech is a start up with the goal of enabling consumers to control their online data footprint and sell their data to data buyers through the iOS & Android mobile apps or Chrome web extension.
My team coordinated with the CEO and developer team at Solipay Tech to improve the user experience of the new Solipay mobile app.

Initially Solipay was thinking about a new social feature to increase user engagement in the app, however our research revealed more pressing areas of opportunity to increase user engagement:
We had a video conference with the CEO, Product Manager and Lead Developer at Solipay to find out a little more about their vision and goals for the Solipay Tech mobile app.
Feature Analysis helps us to discover the types of features that users expect to see
We researched eight competitors and found where Solipay is unique in the private/passive data sharing market
User interviews were challenging because we sent a screening survey to over 20 users from the Solipay waitlist but were only able to schedule interviews with 5.
We found that users weren't able to fully utilize the app because the data buyer portion of the app is not up and running. They could sign up and choose data types to sell but there were no buyers.
"I just kind of have to accept them (data sharing agreements) because at the end of the day, I'm still going to use the app."
"I've given away more data for less in return."
"I would like to see how much data I'm collecting."
Research synthesis helped my team identify opportunities to improve user awareness of data management with the Solipay app
These sticky notes represent the key takeaways from our user interviews. The "I" statements help us understand user's behaviors, needs and motivations.
"I want apps to be easy to use and straightforward."
"I would love to get paid for my data."
"I want to be able to control how my data is being used."
"I want to learn about data management."
My team decided that we would expand our interviews to include potential users of the app and pivot from discovering a user persona to discovering a user archetype.
People are aware their data is being collected by the apps they use, but don't know how they can benefit from it directly.
Digital natives are always looking for opportunities to raise their income passively, especially if it involves something they already do. However, they won't participate in something that feels suspicious.
How might we demonstrate the monetary benefit of sharing data while ensuring they can trust the platform with sensitive information?
We quickly sketched and compared new designs for the main functions: Data Permissions and Offers.
Permissions
Offers
After an informal user test of the low fidelity sketches the team realized we could increase user understanding by designing a tutorial onboarding process for the Solipay app.
These are my mid-fidelity wireframes for the user Onboarding and data sharing Permissions & Offers pages. The copy is based on Solipay's website copy. We created a clickable prototype and conducted usability tests with 6 potential users of the Solipay app.

6/6 users succeeded in signing up and completing the onboarding and turning on data sharing
These are some of my hi-fidelity prototype designs. The team created a clickable prototype and tested it with 5 potential users that fit the user archetype.

5/5 users succeeded in signing up and completing the onboarding

4/5 users turned on selected permissions first, one explored the app first
5/5 users accepted data buying offers successfully but wanted more information about the offers they were accepting
